I am a graduate
student at the Bloustein School of Urban Planning and Public
Policy. I received a B.A. in Political Science and Spanish from
Amherst College in May 2006. My decision to pursue a Master's
degree in Public Policy directly following graduation from college
has been Extremely rewarding. I decided to attend the Bloustein
School because it provides access to incredible resources, experience
in a political atmosphere, and allows me to work with a diverse
population. To fulfill the Applied Field Experience requirement
of the MPP program, I am interning at the New Jersey Business
& Industry Association (NJBIA). Additionally, I volunteer
at the Unity Square Revitalization Project, a nonprofit based
in New Brunswick that aims to improve the surrounding neighborhood
through political and educational action. I am currently a member
of the Black Student Organization for Planning and Policy (BSOPP).

My time here
at the Bloustein School so far has been well served. I have
been challenged consistently from the very first day I started
the program. The experience has been rewarding. The faculty
here is really supportive. I've spoken to colleagues in other
programs and they made it clear to me that the level of support
and attention that the faculty provides here is rare. When I
was in the process of picking programs I got a sense of that
when visited the school. I'm a people person and I have a good
sense of character as well. And I had a feeling at that time
that Bloustein would be a good fit. And thankfully, my keen
sense of character has served me well once again. One of the
great things about this program is their exchange program. I
have students in my classes that are from China, South Korea
and India and some of them are practitioners in the field. You're
not just learning from your professors here but from the students
as well. Sometimes the experience is overwhelming for me because
there is so much to take in and internalize. I am not the same
man that I was when I started this program. I have a stronger
sense of confidence in myself and what I'm capable of and that
makes me very proud to be student at the Edward J. Bloustein
School of Public Policy. |

As
a Latina from Brooklyn, New York, my passion to help the under-represented
population in society led me to pursue a Doctoral degree in
Urban Planning and Public Policy Formation from the Bloustein
School . My research interests include community development,
gentrification, race, class and power. The program's excellent
reputation amongst urban planning, policy and geography programs
in the Northeast led me to apply to the Bloustein School. The
school's dedicated faculty and its proximity to New York City
are what impressed me the most. I understand that as a woman
of color in a predominantly white institution my research interests
need to be supported, nurtured and respected. I knew that Bloustein's
faculty and students would do just that. Studying sensitive
issues like racism, class, power and equity, I have never felt
out of place and have not felt the need to 'tone' my approach
down. My advisors, professors and classmates have been supportive
and open-minded along the way.
