| "For
me, the best of what Rutgers has to offer is the opportunity
to study across disciplines. From the very beginning of my time
on the New Brunswick campus I have been encouraged to learn
with and from scholars representing a broad range of intellectual
perspectives. My research in media and communication has been
greatly enhanced by my experiences in the Women's and Gender
Studies certificate program and a graduate fellowship at the
Eagleton Institute for Politics. What I have learned at Rutgers
is that interdisciplinary scholarship will prepare me for today's
professorate." |

| I
am pleased to live in New Jersey, one of the most diverse states
in the U.S. New Jersey has a significant Muslim and Jewish population.
It also has one of the highest concentrations of South Asians:
people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, etc.
The student body at Rutgers reflects this diversity and makes
for a stimulating classroom environment. I enjoy teaching at
Rutgers and believe it is both important and necessary for us
to have diverse faculty and students who can challenge each
other to think "outside the box." |

| As
a mature, international graduate student from Jamaica, some
of my early recollections of being at Rutgers relate to my identity
in relation to this new American culture--academic, dynamic,
diverse, and multicultural. The environment at Rutgers has helped
to bring a level of comfort to this somewhat difficult transition
as diversity is embraced in a number of areas. The range of
graduate student support groups, including the Graduate Christian
Fellowship and the Center for International Students (among
others), has enabled me to connect with the familiar within
a seemingly unfamiliar setting. I also found an openness and
inclusiveness both inside and outside the classroom, and this
encouraged me to raise my voice and express my perspectives
and beliefs. I am pleased to be at Rutgers where there is a
strong commitment to the diversity that is reflected in the
student body. |
