"My
Rutgers experience began in September 1998 when I walked onto
the campus as a first-year student. I came to New Jersey from
Maryland, because I grew up in a 'Rutgers family' and had
learned of this outstanding university through my parents,
older brother, aunts, uncles and cousins-all alumni! Initially
challenged by the large classes, the breadth of students and
expansive geography of the New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses,
I wondered how I would 'stand out' and be distinguishable
in the eyes of my professors. After all, 'Everyone at Rutgers
is a genius,' I thought. I would soon find that the challenge
was not as formidable as I expected. The faculty at Rutgers
consists of not only extremely knowledgeable and esteemed
researchers, but also thoughtful and considerate "teachers."
They are not just concerned about your performance in their
classrooms, but your overall success in life! Some students
encounter only one instructor in their lifetime who makes
a significant impact on them. Fortunately, throughout my Rutgers
years, I can recall seven! Additionally, as a woman of color,
I felt completely understood in my views and welcomed by professors
and students alike! As an undergraduate labor studies major,
I was more than prepared to tackle the curriculum of the master's
program and take on the responsibilities of my current position
as an Merck & Co., Inc., Human Resources Analyst. Based
on my very positive personal and academic experience, I would
encourage every prospective student to come for a visit and
see for yourself, just exactly what Rutgers University has
in store for YOU!"

I was drawn to the intellectual and interdisciplinary
community at Rutgers. The international diversity, the
class, race, and the 'all walks of life' diversity that
constitute the environment here reflect a more genuine
microcosm of the world we live in compared to most campuses
I've been on. This grounds my thinking, honing the real-world
impact that I want my research and teaching to center
around. The critical mass of traditionally underrepresented
minorities among faculty, administration, staff, and
graduate and undergraduate students here at Rutgers
is important to me as well. I feel I enrich the Rutgers
community by offering a different intellectual perspective
in my classes that many have not been exposed to and
that encourages students to think critically about the
world they live in.
